Happy Star supports first US-built WTIV
In March 2025, BigLift Shipping’s MV Happy Star carried out a shipment for its client, Blue Water Shipping (Denmark), transporting sea fastening structures from Bergen, Denmark to Brownsville, USA. These components were destined for a newly constructed US wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV), Charybdis, which will handle both current and next-generation wind turbines and foundations.

Charybdis is the first US-flagged and Jones Act-compliant WTIV, set to serve the US offshore wind market.
Because of the cargo’s unusual dimensions and unit weights of up to 860 mt, there were no other vessels capable of performing the shipment than BigLift’s Happy S-Type vessels. MV Happy Star had a brief window in her otherwise packed schedule, which made it possible to squeeze this shipment in.
Several logistical challenges had to be addressed in the months leading up to the operation. Part of the cargo originated from a berth with severe length and draft restrictions, which made direct access difficult. Ultimately, it was decided to load these units onto a barge and tranship them to MV Happy Star at an alternative berth.
Another challenge was caused by the shape of certain cargo items and the absence of lashing points, which posed a risk of tipping during transit. A solution was found after technical discussions with the client: lashing points were added, and a “support tower” from containers was constructed on deck to stabilise the unit during the voyage.
Despite the thorough planning, a few last-minute hurdles emerged, such as a request for an expedited schedule, additional cargo, poor weather during load-out, and delays that required a revised loading sequence. All issues were resolved to the client’s satisfaction, and MV Happy Star completed her loading without delay and departed as planned.
Following a smooth 19-day ocean crossing, the vessel arrived at the shipyard in Brownsville. Although persistent thunderstorms along the Texas coast caused minor delays, the cargo was successfully discharged onto the WTIV. MV Happy Star then continued to her next assignment.
BigLift Shipping is proud to look back at another technically demanding project that could be successfully completed for a valued client.
