Spliethoff Group unveils Next-Generation MARIN Simulator in Manila

Spliethoff Group has taken a major step in maritime safety and operational excellence with the launch of its next-generation training simulator in Manila, Philippines, in December 2025. Developed by the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN), this advanced crane and ballast simulator provides highly realistic conditions for training seafarers in heavy-lift and DP2 operations.

Spliethoff has used simulators since 2015 to prepare crews for complex lifting tasks, but with older systems now outdated, MARIN delivered two customised units: one now operational in Manila and another soon to be installed in Amsterdam. The new system offers an immersive 3D experience using MARIN’s Dolphin software to replicate vessel motions caused by waves, wind, currents and crane movements. Crews can practise crane handling, ballasting and ro-ro operations, and even simulate offshore projects in DP2 mode.

The simulator includes multiple workstations and an expanded library of vessel models, featuring BigLift Shipping’s DP2 MC-Class deck carriers and Spliethoff’s DP2 B-Type vessels. It also enables pre-simulation of complex projects, giving officers a safe environment to prepare and clients a clear visual preview. This investment reflects Spliethoff’s commitment to equipping crews with the best tools to handle complex cargo and DP2 operations safely and efficiently.

BigLift Shipping strengthens leadership team for future growth

We strengthened our leadership team to support our continued growth. Johan Boer took on the role of Managing Director, building on his experience in commercial leadership where he helped ensure stability and continuity during a key period.

In addition, Paul van Lith has been appointed Director Operations. A former captain within the company’s heavy lift fleet, he brings strong operational expertise and deep project execution knowledge.

With these changes, BigLift Shipping further enhances its commercial and operational capabilities, positioning the company to meet growing demand and deliver increasingly complex heavy lift projects in the years ahead.
